Mental Skills Need Work? Lose the Stigma, Gain the Advantage

Coaches, Consultants, and Counselors… Can Offer More Help Than You Think

Helping others doesn’t have to be a negative stigma, shameful, or incur labeling. It’s a pathway to become stronger and more effective in your daily lifestyle. Are you going to give someone else your position on your relay? Are you going to hand over your position at work? Are you going to relinquish your position in line? Would you willy hand over your position as a starter? If you’re weak you might say, “depending on the circumstances, maybe”, but if you worked your way to the top and plan on only moving up, then you would respond with, “No, I earned my position and I deserve success!”

How do you think those type of people got there? They aren’t afraid to ask for help, set goals, be assertive, use their resources, and learn to use their skills to benefit themselves. You possess the ability. You just need to find your inner desire and go for it.

Unfortunately in school these days we have so much on the agenda and not enough time to cover it. Electives are being dropped, and social skills aren’t being taught. Where are your children learning coping skills? When young athletes walk into my office, they often don’t know how to handle pressure or what to do with failure because they haven’t experienced that before. When college age athletes walk in or adults, they often can’t manage emotions because they too, haven’t been taught. Perhaps they are facing real stress for the first time ever or experiencing anxiety because of the demands now placed upon them. Here are a few ways psychological skills training can transform you.

A performance coach or sports psychology consultant can provide support and relief for emotional distress. They can help you make decisions, get direction in your life, and provide objective feedback that your spouse, family, and friends can’t. A performance coach can teach you healthy habits, such as effective communication, channeling nerves and anxiety better, thinking more productively, and improving focus. Everything you do is a performance. You’re the star in your life; you’re center stage. What do you want to see happen? A performance coach can listen without judging, encourage, and promote behavior change.

Ask yourself questions like: where do I want to go, where do I see myself in a few years, what do I want out of life, and what can I do about it. As Socrates once said, “The unexamined life is not worth living”. Be proactive in your own life. This means using your resources. So again, a consultant can teach you how to reach your potential, how to build confidence, ways to resolve conflicts, studying more effectively, and ways to relax.

Coaches assist individuals in determining goals that are in line with their dreams and values. A sport psychology coach is trained in these areas to offer help to clients, but ultimately the client is in charge. The stigma can be lifted; it’s no longer socially unacceptable and the negative attitudes can be brushed aside. Working with a performance coach or sports psychology consultant is the hottest concept out there now. Don’t you want to gain the competitive edge? Not be left out? Rather than keep up with the Joneses, BE the Joneses.
